What people ask from the lobby, looking up. Answered from the balcony, looking down, in as few words as a big number needs.
- What does forty-two dollars buy me?
- A name on a state form, an address in the state, and the right to say your agent is the one at the top of the price list. The form costs the same at every floor. We chose the top one.
- Anybody up in the office?
- We are up. We are always up. The office is under us, and it is empty, and we can see that from here. Seeing it is not the same as being in it.
- Why only Wyoming, if the world is yours?
- The world is ours. This is the part we have sent for so far. One state, all of it, top to bottom. The other forty-nine can wait in the lobby.
- What is the biggest check you would ever write me?
- The fees from the three months before the trouble, which comes to $10.50. We would write it big. It would still be that number.
- Who counts the mail?
- We do. Every envelope, out loud, on the board by the stairs. Counting is not opening, and it is not sending. The count is accurate. The mail is under the board.
- Who meets the process server?
- The door. We are above the door. The state has a rule for what happens when papers reach an address and nobody comes down, and it is on the Wyoming page, in smaller type than we would have used.
- Who is beneath you?

- The plural charges three dollars. Why should I pay you fourteen times that?
- Because three dollars is what the plural could count to. We counted to forty-two. Same nothing at both numbers. Ours is the number people remember.
- Can you cut me loose?
- At any time, for any reason or none, without notice and without refund. We would announce it. You would hear it from the lobby.
- Does it all renew next year?
- It does not. Nothing here rolls over on its own. Next year you climb the stairs again and say the number again. We will be up here. We are always up here.
- Did you build this yourself?
- Every floor. Started with nothing, which is also what we offer, so the start and the product are the same. We count that as a win. We count everything as a win.
- Will forty-two ever become forty-three?
- No. Forty-two is the number we chose and we chose it out loud. Forty-three is somebody else's. We do not take other people's numbers.
- Can I call the top floor?
- The number is on every page. It rings up here. A team member picks up, when there is one, and says the price before you ask. Ask anyway. We like saying it.
